My limited experience in Indian food.

Luke and Sara
Dots, not feathers.

I've eaten at three Indian restaurants here in Nashville. Shalimar, in Green Hills; Sitar, downtown on West End; and Taste of India, downtown on Church.

(This is the extent of my exposure to Indian food.)

However, I have to say that of the three, Sitar is definitely my favorite, and I have no idea what Scene readers were thinking when they voted Shalimar the best Indian restaurant in Nashville. First off, Shalimar is overpriced. Waaaaaay overpriced. Nice setting, but really, come on guys. At Sitar I pay the same amount and get naan, chutneys, an appetizer, a mango lassi, and an entree for the same price as a mango lassi and an entree at Shalimar. Also, at Shalimar tonight, I ordered my entree as "mild". I was unaware that "mild" meant "no spice at all." See, at Sitar, "mild" means "spicy, but your head won't explode."

I will give props to the service at Shalimar; it was exemplary, but not enough to make up for the overpriced, somewhat bland food.

I had Taste of India quite some time ago, maybe a year or two? So I can't really say much about that. I think it was good and the service was good.

Two thumbs up for Sitar.

Glad you posted this, as sampling Indian food is on my list of "stuff to do in Nashville before the end of this year".

Now to find time to go... =X^|

One of the best things about Sitar (if they're still doing it) is that on weekends during certain hours they have a buffet set up. It would be a great for a beginner. You don't have to know anything about Indian food, just grab what strikes you & pay attention to what it's called. First & only Indian buffet I've ever seen.

They were also in the middle of renovations last time I went. Should be even nicer now.

I'm surprised, since most Indian restaurants I've ever been to have a buffet, at least during certain times of the week. Even Shalimar has one on Saturdays.

Taste of India has a daily lunch buffet for cheaper than any other Indian restaurant I've ever been to, in any city I've ever been in. And the food is good, too.

They must shut 'em down real quick & tear down the signs when they see me coming. Y'know, I thought I smelled Indian food as soon as I walked in.

Those sneaky bastards.

Noon Buffet
I have been to the weekday lunch buffet at Sitar 3 times in the last 2 weeks, and will most likely go again this week. The buffet is a really good way to experience Sitar, and it is only $7.09 if you drink water instead of getting a different drink. It was my first experience with Indian food, and still ranks as some of the best.

We've got 2 or 3 great Indian restaurants in Memphis. I love saag and korma, and there's one up the street that has the best keema naan... drooling just thinking about it!
